Monday a federal judge issued a temporary injunction that halts implementation of President Trump's directive to prohibit transgender people from joining the military. The ruling allows transgender troops to enlist and serve openly but stops short of halting the prohibition of using military funds for gender reassignment surgery.

Sarah Harris has this profile of a transgender service member who wants to be judged for his military qualifications, and not for being transgender.

This story was produced by the American Homefront Project, a public media collaboration that reports on American military life and veterans. Funding comes from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the Bob Woodruff Foundation.

This segment aired on October 31, 2017.
