Aretha Franklin, the "Queen of Soul," died Thursday in Detroit after a battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 76. We listen back to some of Franklin's best-known songs, and discuss her life, career and cultural impact with Mark Anthony Neal, professor of African-American studies at Duke University. Also, a toxic algae bloom known as red tide has sickened people and killed manatees, sea turtles and millions of fish. Florida Gov. Rick Scott has declared a state of emergency in seven counties along the Gulf of Mexico. And we talk with James Faluszczak, one of many witnesses to testify before the grand jury in Pennsylvania about being abused by a Catholic priest. He is a former priest himself. That and more, in hour one of Here & Now's Aug. 16, 2018 full broadcast. You can read and hear more at hereandnow.org, follow us on Twitter and join the conversation on Facebook.
