Eight states and Washington, D.C., will hold presidential primaries Tuesday as the effects of a deepening political and health crisis in the U.S. take hold.

President Trump is under fire after police cleared streets of peaceful protesters near the White House with tear gas and rubber bullets to make way for a presidential photo opportunity outside a D.C. church. The controversy came just after a speech in which Trump threatened to use the military to quell nationwide protests of police brutality and said he was an "ally of all peaceful protesters."

Now, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden is expected to speak in Philadelphia on the current political climate. And amid the chaos, COVID-19 still rages in the U.S.

NPR's Domenico Montanaro (@DomenicoNPR) joins host Jeremy Hobson for the latest on politics in the age of coronavirus.

This segment aired on June 2, 2020.
