The past few years have been difficult for Nya Owens of Oakland, California. The pandemic made learning difficult, and she's moved several times after losing her brother to gun violence.

But a new intensive mentoring program has been working with high school seniors, including Nya, giving them skills to use both in and outside the classroom. Julia McEvoy of KQED has more.

This segment aired on June 6, 2022.
