Edify Expands With Pass/Fail Series

Twenty-five years ago, Massachusetts lawmakers made a “grand bargain” which ushered in dramatic changes to schools across the state. The 1993 Education Reform Act ushered in controversial tools to improve public education — the MCAS test, charter schools — in exchange for a huge influx of funding. Today, Massachusetts’ public schools are considered the best in the nation, in part because of those changes. But the state still faces a large, and growing, achievement gap between student populations. All week, we look at the promise and the legacy of the 1993 education reform when it comes to achievement and equity.
