Athena began her career in radio as an intern on National Public Radio's Washington Desk in 1998. After a brief hiatus spent running a non-profit documentary-making program for at-risk youth in Poughkeepsie, New York, Athena returned as Editorial Assistant for NPR's Elections Unit in 2000.

Over the next couple years, she went on to work for the National Desk, and in production for Weekend Edition Saturday and Morning Edition. She was then selected for NPR's Reporter Fellowship in 2002, during which, she spent a month reporting at WBUR.

Following that, Athena reported from member station KPBS in San Diego, California for half a year, until securing a position as news reporter at WBUR in the summer of 2003.
