WBUR WINS NATIONAL PRNDI AWARD

WBUR was honored with a first place PRNDI (Public Radio News Directors, Incorporated) award in the Breaking News category for its coverage of the Big Dig Tunnel Collapse, which occurred in July, 2006. The award covers the efforts of WBUR’s newsroom as it responded in the first hours of this important breaking story. WBUR’s submission included material from the “Morning Edition” segment airing on July 10, 2006, hourly newscasts and cut-ins which aired during All Things Considered” that afternoon.

WBUR WINS THREE NATIONAL EDWARD R. MURROW AWARDS

WBUR has won three prestigious national Edward R. Murrow awards for reporting in 2006. The winners recently named by the Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) in its annual journalism competition are " A Mission, a Merger and a Medical Center: the 10 th Anniversary of Boston Medical Center " (Reporter Rachel Gotbaum) in the category of News Documentary ; “ Kenya's Fastest Town ” (Reporter Karen Given) in the category of Sports Reporting ; and “ Electric Shock Treatments: Tough Love or Torture ” (Reporter Allan Coukell) in the category of Hard News Feature.

 

WBUR WINS REGIONAL ASSOCIATED PRESS AND RTNDA AWARDS

WBUR had a very strong showing in recent Associated Press (AP) awards for journalistic excellence in New England.  Given in their respective categories, the AP award winners for 2006 are:

  • General News Reporting -   “War on the Homefront” (Reporter Monica Brady-Myerov; Editor, Margaret Evans; Engineer Michael Garth)
  • Documentary - "A Mission, a Merger and a Medical Center" (Senior Producer Anna Bensted; Reporter Rachel Gotbaum; Technical Director George Hicks)
  • Sports Program -  Only a Game (Bill Littlefield, Gary Waleik, Karen Given and Gabe O'Connor, Jon Perotti)
  • Use of Sound -  “Cirkestra”  (Reporter Andrea Shea; Editor Margaret Evans; Engineer Michael Garth)
  • Public Affairs -  “Boston at the Crossroads” (Executive Producer Anna Bensted; Producer Mark Navin; Reporters Bob Oakes, Martha Bebinger, Monica Brady-Myerov and Fred Thys; Engineer George Hicks)

In April the Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) released the names of the winners for its annual regional awards for 2006. WBUR received recognition in four categories:

  • Sports Reporting – “Kenya's Fastest Town” (Reporter Karen Given; Technical Director Jon Perotti)
  • Feature: Hard News – “Electric Shock Treatments: Tough Love or Torture” (Reporter Allan Coukell; Editor Margaret Evans; Technical Director Michael Garth)
  • Use of Sound - "The Story of a Violin" (Reporter Matt Largey)
  • News Documentary - "A Mission, a Merger and a Medical Center" (Senior Producer Anna Bensted; Reporter Rachel Gotbaum; Technical Director George Hicks)


WBUR HONORED WITH NEW ENGLAND DIRECT MARKETING ASSOCIATION AWARD

WBUR's in-house creative marketing team was recognized in April at the 26 th Annual New England Direct Marketing Association (NEDMA) award ceremony.  Designer/illustrator Ryan Ferland and copywriter Chris Antonowich won the Silver Award for Best Collateral. The winning piece was Airwaves – A WBUR Member Magazine , a publication originally sent to members in September, 2006.  WBUR's piece will now compete in the second round of the DMA's International Echo awards, placing it in competition with entries from more than 40 countries worldwide.
