Wondering What's In Store For Downtown Crossing

With a $10.5 billion merger in the works between Federated Department Stores and May Department Stores, it's unclear what the future holds for Downtown Crossing.

If the deal goes through, there's speculation that all Filene's could be closed and replaced by Macy's.

In Downtown Crossing, another May department store, such as Lord and Taylor, could replace Filene's, or the retail space could be sold. The discount chain Target has already expressed interest in the location.

Downtown crossing has been anchored by two department stores since Filene's moved there in 1912. Now, facing its likely departure, local merchants are anxious about what will take its place.

WBUR's Monica Brady-Myerov visits Bromfield Camera Company and speaks with Russ Centamore. He's a co-owner of the family-owned and operated business, which has been in Downtown Crossing for more than 40 years.

This program aired on July 13, 2005. The audio for this program is not available.
