Audio Postcard: End of a Holiday Tradition

This year rings in the final holiday season for Filenes Department Stores. The company was acquired last February by Federated Department Stores.

From the start, Filenes — which opened in 1890 and moved in 1912 — has been a mainstay in Boston's Downtown Crossing district. During the holidays, a Christmas tree adorns the Filenes marquee and the store is known for its festive displays.

But those traditions end this year. To gauge reaction, we visited downtown crossing yesterday and spoke with shoppers and workers in the area.

This program aired on December 23, 2005. The audio for this program is not available.
