Closing the Health Care Gap
By Bob Oakes
Listen to story (Real Audio)
Boston, MA - July 26, 2005 - Today, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is launching what it says is the first hospital-based center trying to eliminate racial disparities in health care. It's an issue that's gained attention in recent years in both the medical and research worlds.
In a report last month, for instance, the Boston Public Health Commission found that blacks and Latinos have higher rates than whites of infant mortality, diabetes, asthma and HIV.
Now, with its new Disparities Solution Center, MGH is aiming to bridge that kind of gap. Dr. Joseph Betancourt, the center's director, joins Bob Oakes to talk about some of the programs it will offer.
