Summers Quits

Lawrence Summers has decided to end his tenure at the helm of Harvard University.

He announced his decision to resign as president yesterday ahead of a no-confidence vote scheduled for next week's meeting of the faculty of arts and sciences.

Former president Derek Bok will temporarily assume leadership after Summers leaves Harvard at the end of June.

Summers' decision caps more than a year of speculation and ends the shortest tenure of any Harvard president since 1862.
