Vineyard Memories of Buchwald

Almost one year ago, doctors told Art Buchwald he only had a few weeks to live. The legendary columnist and humorist defied the prognosis, refused dialysis for his failing kidneys...and decided to make the most of the rest of his life.

Buchwald died on Wednesday night. He was 81 years old.

Buchwald spent decades summering on Martha's Vineyard and became a favorite among year-round residents because he treated the island as more than a vacation home.

WBUR's Bianca Vazquez Toness has more on that part of Buchwald's life.

The audio for this story will be available on WBUR's web site after 10 a.m. on Friday.

This program aired on January 19, 2007. The audio for this program is not available.
