Wang at Symphony Hall

Symphony-goers expecting to hear renowned pianist Martha Argerich perform Beethoven's Piano Concerto Number 1 tonight with the Boston Symphony Orchestra are in for a bit of a surprise. In place of the ailing 65-year old will be a 20-year old Chinese music student performing Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto Number 1.

Yuja Wang seems like any other college student--she loves food and shopping, surfing the internet and going to parties. But, her infectious giggle and blonde highlights belie her award-winning virtuosity as a pianist. Wang has already taken the stage as a soloist and with orchestras across the globe, and she's spending her spring break from the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia filling in with the BSO. Morning Edition dropped in on Wang's first rehearsal at Symphony Hall.

This program aired on March 8, 2007. The audio for this program is not available.
