Patrick Seeks to Close Fernald

The Deval Patrick Administration is pushing forward with plans to close a facility serving some of the state's most severally mentally retarded residents.

A federal judge ruled in August that The Fernald Developmental Center should be kept open, but Governor Patrick is now appealing that decision.

Patrick is citing cost and the availability of alternative settings, as reasons for pushing to shut down the Waltham facility and relocate its 185 residents.
