Boston Braces for Blizzard

It looks like southern New England is in for a one-two winter punch over the next several days. Round one arrives this afternoon.

The National Weather Service has issued a heavy snow warning for a wide swath of Massachusetts from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m.

storm is expected to be relatively short, but intense. It should be at its height during the afternoon commute and begin tapering off between 7 and 10 p.m.

Forecasters say snow accumulation could range from as much as a foot in the higher elevations of the Berkshires, to as little as 2-4 inches on Cape Cod.

A number of school districts have announced early dismissals to try to get students home before the heaviest snow hits.

The second round of winter weather is poised to hit the region late Saturday and Sunday, with the possibility of a nor'easter developing off the coast.

WBUR's Bob Oakes discussed todays weather with WCVB meteorologist J.C. Monahan.
