BOSTON, Mass. - October 12, 2007 - In part two of our series on the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway, today we're looking at one of the parks, which has been the source of heated debate.
The controversy revolves around plans by the Armenian Heritage Foundation to use the space known as Parcel 13 to commemorate the mass killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks in 1915.
Labeling the Armenian killings as "genocide" is a flash point internationally. Turkey withdrew its ambassador from Washington yesterday after a US House Committee voted to adopt the term. The Bush administration wants the House to drop the matter because it fears further damaging relations with Turkey, a key ally in the Iraq war.
Here in Boston, the issue has delayed the opening of one park on the Greenway: a small half-acre section of land sitting between Faneuil Hall and the North End, called Parcel 13. Though it has grass, sidewalks, and benches, Parcel 13 is still in the design phase and is bound up in bureaucracy.
As WBUR's Bob Oakes reports, a lot of people are vested in what happens to this little patch of green.
