Baseball's Dark Side

The Red Sox open their regular season next week at a most irregular location: the Tokyo Dome. Boston hits off its tour of Japan with two exhibition games against Japanese teams this weekend before facing Oakland Athletics on Tuesday in the first game of the regular season.

This new season starts after an off-season dominated by the site of former Yankees and Red Sox ace Roger Clemens testifying before Congress and denying performance enhancing drug use.

As shocked and surprised as some fans have been about the recent steroid use in baseball, the game has a rich history of scandal. A new book, 'The Dark Side of the Diamond: Gambling, Violence, Drugs and Alcoholism in the National Pastime,' explores baseball's underbelly.

It's written by Northeastern University Law School Professor Roger Abrams who joins us for a conversation.

This program aired on March 21, 2008. The audio for this program is not available.
