Chang-Diaz Handily Wins 2nd Suffolk District

With 92 percent of the vote, Sonia Chang-Diaz was easily elected the new state senator of 2nd Suffolk district.

William Leonard of the Socialist Worker's Party garnered five percent of the vote.

It's unclear how many of the remaining 2.5 percent of write-in votes went to the district's current State Senator Dianne Wilkerson.

The embattled Wilkerson was arrested by the FBI last week for allegedly taking more than $23,000 dollars in bribes to influence state business.

Chang-Diaz says she is humbled by the results and is eager to begin tackling the issues.

"We saw really overwhelming results across the district, a great affirmation of the statement that was made in September when voters said, 'yes, we do want to expect more from from our elected leaders and have both the good issue positions and the ethics and accountability.'"

Wilkerson, who suspended her sticker campaign last week in the wake of the scandal, is expected to make an announcement today about her remaining time in office.

Governor Patrick has set up a task force to look into comprehensive ethics reform in state government.
