CHATHAM, Mass. - April 09, 2008 - Commercial fishing is the Bay State's oldest industry, but it's on the edge of collapse. Federal rules against over-fishing have forced many fishermen out of business in ports from Maine to Rhode Island.
Fish stocks are showing signs of fragile recovery, and Congress just sent the Commonwealth more than $13 million to help offset the effects of the federal rules. But fishermen say the only way to salvage their way of life is to overhaul the way they do business.
One fishing community in Massachusetts is taking the lead, as WBUR's Shannon Mullen reports.
