LEXINGTON, Mass. - May 14, 2008 - When it was founded in 1893, Cotting School was the country's first day school for children with physical disabilities.

Today, the non-profit continues to teach children and foster emotional and social development at its campus in Lexington.

Its motto has always been "innovation and excellence" but the school's approach has also evolved with the times.

Now a new book, "Cotting School," chronicles its history amid shifting attitudes over the last century toward educating children with disabilities.

WBUR's Delores Handy visited Cotting yesterday to talk with the book's co-authors. Elizabeth Campbell Peters is Director of Annual Giving and Communications at Cotting and David Manzo is the school's President.

WBUR's Sarah Bush produced this story.
