UMass Grapples With $12 Million Budget Cut
By Dave Shaw
AMHERST, Mass. - October 16, 2008 - State agencies and social services providers are today beginning to assess the affects of a $1 billion state budget cut unveiled yesterday by Governor Patrick.
The University of Massachusetts in Amherst will see a five percent budget cut, which amounts to $12 million.
"No one really knows how this is going to play out," says UMass spokesman Ed Blaguszewski, "but we're going to be faced with some difficult decisions going forward and we need to have those discussions begin shortly."
Under the cuts, the Amherst campus will freeze hiring. The university says it has no plans to increase student fees this year.
