Reebok To Cut Over 100 Mass. Jobs

Canton-based athletic-wear maker Reebok says it will lay off about 300 people, including more than 100 from Massachusetts.

WBUR's Abigail Beshkin reports.

Most of the layoffs are in sales and marketing. One hundred are from Reebok's Canton headquarters. Another 12 come from the headwear manufacturing division in Matapoisset.

No word on how much the cuts will save Reebok. But spokeswoman Josie Stevens says they were necessary, given falling retail sales.

Stevens: We've had to take these necessary steps to bring our cost structure in line with what our targets are for 2009, but you know it's tough times out there.

The layoffs were announced yesterday and took effect immediately. Before the cuts, Reebok had about 1700 employees in Massachusetts.
