Mayor Orders Certified Mechanics For Fire Truck Maintenance

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has ordered the city's fire commissioner to hire four licensed mechanics to maintain the department's fire trucks.

Right now, the trucks are maintained by 13 uniformed firefighters who are not certified mechanics. Concern about fire truck safety follows an accident last week that killed Boston Fire Lt. Kevin Kelley.

He died when the fire truck he was riding in lost control and crashed into an apartment building. The truck's brakes had not been inspected in 10 months.
