Mass. Democrat To Oversee National Service Corp.

President Barack Obama is asking all Americans to answer a call for service to the country. He agenda includes expanding AmeriCorps from 75 thousand to 250 thousand positions, engaging senior citizens in volunteerism, and pushing service learning in schools.

The Corporation for National and Community Service, which provides grants to such national organizations as VISTA and Senior Corps, recently elected Alan Solomont as its new chairman.

Alan Solomont has been active for many years in the Democratic Party and served as President Obama's local finance chairman. He himself volunteers for many community and charitable organizations.

Alan Solmont joined WBUR to talk about his new role.
