Mother Charged In Denying Cancer Meds To Son

The mother of a 9-year-old boy who died of cancer is charged with reckless child endangerment for allegedly withholding her son's medication.

Jeremy Fraser died Monday. The boy — who also had autism — was diagnosed with leukemia in 2006. He was in remission last fall, but the cancer returned within months.

Prosecutors in July said his mother, Kristen Anne LaBrie, canceled at least a dozen appointments for chemotherapy treatment and did not fill at least half the prescriptions her son had been given. She has pleaded not guilty to reckless child endangerment.

LaBrie did not show up at Salem District Court today for a pretrial hearing scheduled before her son's death.

Eric Fraser, who is the boy's father and who is estranged from LaBrie, told reporters after the hearing that he was relieved his son's suffering was over, but wanted to see justice.

This program aired on March 31, 2009. The audio for this program is not available.
