Union Says Volunteer Teachers Not Welcome

The Boston Teachers Union is telling recruits from the public service program Teach for America that they're not welcome in Boston schools.

Twenty Teach for America teachers are expected to come to the city next fall, just weeks after the expected layoffs of Boston teachers.

The Boston Globe reports the union says the layoffs mean there will be "surplus" teachers and the Teach for America program won't be needed.

But school officials say they will not put any of the volunteers in positions that were laid off.

This program aired on April 3, 2009. The audio for this program is not available.
