Governor Wants Answers On Pike Backup

Governor Deval Patrick is asking the head of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority for a full accounting of what led to major backups on the Pike on Easter Sunday.

The Pike's executive director says an unusually high number of toll collectors called in sick, but officials did not hire replacement workers because of a new policy limiting overtime pay.

The governor says he himself was stuck in Pike traffic over the weekend.

167 toll collectors were scheduled to work. Seventeen called in sick.
