Shirley Correction Officers Assaulted By Inmate

A unit of the state's maximum security prison in Shirley is in lockdown after an inmate assaulted four correction officers Thursday night.

Steve Kenneway, head of the union which represents prison guards, said one of the officers was slashed in the throat and another was stabbed on his cheek after a prisoner became enraged because he was assigned to double bunk with another inmate at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center.

All four officers were taken to a nearby hospital where they were treated and released.

A Department of Corrections official said the rest of the prison is operating normally.
