A record breaking crowd was expected on the Boston Esplanade Sunday to celebrate the nation's 224th birthday.

Sunday morning spectators began gathering on the oval in front of the Hatch Shell.

Rick Sullivan is the Commissioner of the Department of Conservation and Recreation. He predicts the crowd to grow as people hold their own smaller celebrations throughout the day.

"We do ask that people don't bring grills. No alcohol allowed...just be smart. Come on down. Have a great time.", Sullivan said.

Thousands of spectators last night watched the Boston Pops rehearse for tonight's concert.

Tonight's concert begins at 8:30PM. The massive fireworks display starts at 10:30PM.

This program aired on July 4, 2010. The audio for this program is not available.
