The great Boston native Benjamin Franklin is credited with saying, "Greatness is all around you."

If a new list from the state is to be believed, he was definitely right. A special commission has spent 19 months working on a list of 1,000 "great places" in Massachusetts. One thousand might sound like a lot — but the list was whittled down from some 15,000 places.

Can Massachusetts possibly be that, well, great?

Former state legislator Erik Turkington chairs the special commission, and joined WBUR with a preview of the list.
