Gardner Museum Announces New Curator Of Landscape

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum has hired a new consulting curator of landscape, according to an announcement released Monday. Charles Waldheim will assume the position in January.

This news comes about a year before the Gardner will open its new state-of-the-art wing, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano. Waldheim will be quite busy when he starts work because the museum plans to emphasize its meticulous gardens as part of the expansion. He will also program lectures and exhibitions that reflect Gardner's place in Boston's landscape.

The museum's namesake was an urban gardener herself, and museum Director Anne Hawley said in a press release that Waldheim's appointment will help further Gardner's legacy and mission.

“I look forward to contributing to the Gardner’s ongoing renewal through the development of its public programs on contemporary landscape," Waldheim said. "Given the Gardner’s historic commitments in this area, and their extraordinary investment in new programming associated with the opening of the new venue in 2012, this is an important moment in the life of this singular institution."

Waldheim is the current chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. He runs a consulting company, Urban Agency. In 2006, Waldheim received the Rome Prize Fellowship in Landscape Architecture from the American Academy in Rome.

This program aired on December 6, 2010. The audio for this program is not available.
