Small Plane Crashes In Western Mass. Woods, 1 Dies

A small plane that crashed in rural western Massachusetts killing one of the four people on board experienced engine failure before hitting some power lines and landing upside down in a field.

A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman says the single-engine Cessna U206G had departed from Keene, N.H. before crashing in Leverett just before 4 p.m. on Sunday. It was headed to MacArthur Airport on Long Island, N.Y.

The spokesman says the pilot attempted to land in the field after the engine failed.

Three people were hospitalized, two in critical condition, one in serious condition. No names were released.

The plane is owned by Airborne Maintenance Inc. of Ronkonkoma, N.Y. The company phone rang busy on Monday.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
