Mass. Speaker: Feds Request Legislative Documents

House Speaker Robert DeLeo says a federal grand jury investigating allegations of rigged hiring practices at the state Probation Department has issued subpoenas for legislative records.

The Democrat says he does not know whether any lawmakers have yet been called to testify before the grand jury.

Federal authorities are investigating allegations of fraud and extortion at the department, where leadership is accused of hiring the politically connected instead of the most qualified candidates for jobs.

DeLeo and Senate President Therese Murray say they have retained an outside lawyer, Thomas Frongillo, to represent both chambers.

The lawyer says so far the subpoenas are only for documents.
