Cost Of Battling Weekend Storm Tops $14M In Mass.

State officials are tallying the cost of battling the weekend storm and the price tag has already climbed into the millions.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation estimates the state spent $14.4 million plowing and sanding roads throughout the storm, which dumped up to 18 inches in the Boston area.

Department spokesman Adam Hurtubise (hurt 'eh-BEEZ) said the cost includes nearly $11 million to keep about 4,000 pieces of snow clearing equipment on the roads during the fiercest part of the storm.

Other costs include $2.8 million for sand, salt and other materials and about $650,000 for overtime costs for workers called in over the weekend.

Official say the storm's timing during a school vacation week made it easier for cleanup crews to do their work.
