Patrick To Be Sworn In For 2nd Term

Gov. Deval Patrick begins his second term shortly after noon Thursday. That's when he'll be sworn in at the State House.

Patrick is holding a toned-down inauguration in recognition of hard times. There will be no outdoor swearing-in with thousands of people spilling down Beacon Hill onto Boston Common, as there were four years ago when Patrick became the state's first African-American governor.

This year, Patrick bows to a more reserved tradition. He will be sworn in inside the chamber of the Massachusetts House.

He will bring back one piece of the ceremony of four years ago: he'll be swearing his oath of office on the Mende Bible, given to John Quincy Adams by the Africans who took over the slave ship Amistad.
