Merrimac School Closes After Smell Detected

A Merrimac school has been closed indefinitely until officials can identify the source of chemical smells and eliminate them.

The Donaghue School's roughly 400 students and 50 teachers and staff will be relocated to other schools in the Pentucket Regional School District starting Tuesday until the problem is solved.

The nauseating smells were reported Friday after asbestos was removed from the school earlier this month following mold remediation work.

The Newburyport Daily News reports that the Board of Health voted to close the school after a walkthrough with administrators and parents.

Fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders are being relocated to Pentucket Regional High School, while third-graders and special education students are being sent to Sweetsir Elementary.
