Mass. Students Continued Strong NAEP Performance

Massachusetts students continue to perform well on national standardized tests. Gov. Deval Patrick announced Tuesday that the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress test results show the state's students are among the best in the nation in science.

The fourth graders tied for first with states including New Hampshire, Virginia, Maine and North Dakota. Eighth graders in the state finished second, one notch below North Dakota.

Patrick pointed out that there is always room for improvement.

“We need to continue to lift those accomplishments, and also make sure the kids know that we have high expectations of them because children respond to high expectations,” Patrick said.

The governor also reiterated his plan to call for an additional $140 million in direct state aid to schools in the budget he will unveil tomorrow.

In 2007 and 2005, Massachusetts students finished first or tied for first in all tests. The test was updated in 2009 and can’t be directly compared.
