Man Pleads Not Guilty To Lowell Shelter Slaying

A homeless teenager accused of fatally stabbing a Lowell shelter worker has been ordered held without bail.

Pericles Clergeau pleaded not guilty to murder at his arraignment Monday in Lowell District Court.

Police say the 19-year-old Clergeau stabbed 34-year-old Jose Roldan of Lowell in the neck on Saturday morning at the Lowell Transitional Living Center.

Authorities say Clergeau was "in an agitated state" and attacked Roldan, who was trying to calm him down.

Roldan was a former resident of the shelter who felt obligated to give back to the shelter that had helped him.

Clergeau's lawyer says his "disoriented" client was abandoned by his parents at a young age and has been in and out of jail.
