State Workers See Lower Health Insurance Rate Increases

State employees will soon pay more for health insurance but the rate increase will be the lowest in three years.

The head of the Group Insurance Commission, Dolores Mitchell, says the lower-than-usual increase is due in part to an effort to urge employees to sign up for less expensive plans by making them re-enroll.

"This is going to say, 'Well before you just stay where you are, you're gonna have to go to your coordinator and say this is the plan that I want, which sort of forces you to think about whether or not you want to save a little money and still get good care,' " Mitchell said.

The GIC says state employee health insurance rates will go up an average of 2.4 percent in July.
