The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has a global reputation for producing elite engineers and making revolutionary scientific discoveries.

Now it's trying to improve its reputation in another area where its track record hasn't been so stellar: the presence of women on its science and engineering faculties. A recent report by MIT found that the school has made substantial advances in eliminating gender bias in the past decade.

On Monday and Tuesday, the school is hosting what it calls a "celebration" of women in those fields, so WBUR's All Things Considered host Sacha Pfeiffer spoke about how MIT has changed with Prof. Lorna Gibson, a tenured engineering professor there.

This program aired on March 28, 2011.
