Lowell City Official Dies In Crash

Lowell is mourning after a city official was pronounced dead in a crash on Interstate 93 in Methuen. State police say Lowell City Treasurer David McGurl was killed Monday morning when his car collided with a tractor-trailer truck.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the 57-year-old Arlington man was driving south on the highway when he veered off the road to his right and collided with the rear of a tractor-trailer parked in an emergency cutout.

Police say it appears McGurl never applied his brakes and the reason he went off the road remains under investigation.

The Sun of Lowell reports that City Manager Bernie Lynch confirmed McGurl's death.
