Irene Causing Headaches On Mass. Highways

Flooding from heavy rain and downed trees and power lines from strong winds are taking their toll on major Massachusetts roadways and Tropical Storm Irene moves into the region.

Fortunately, traffic is reported to be light as most people heed warnings to stay off the roads.

In Westfield, a breached beaver dam has spilled about five inches of water on to the Massachusetts Turnpike.

In Sturbridge, state police reported a tree blocking two lanes of traffic on Interstate 84.

Downed trees were also causing problems on Interstate 93 in Braintree and Route 128 in Dedham.

State police also reported flooding on Route 128 in Waltham and Needham.

Morrissey Boulevard in Boston's Dorchester section was closed due to flooding.
