Bulger $2 Million Reward Paid To Tipster

A Las Vegas man who tried unsuccessfully to claim a $2 million reward for information leading to the arrest of fugitive crime boss James "Whitey" Bulger says the FBI has paid the money to a tipster who gave information that led to his arrest in June.

Bulger was captured in Santa Monica, Calif., where he had been living with his longtime girlfriend, Catherine Greig.

Keith Messina tried to claim all or part of the reward because he reported seeing Bulger in Santa Monica in 2008. Messina said Wednesday that he was recently notified by the FBI that they had rejected his claim and paid the money to a woman who had crossed paths with Bulger and Greig in Santa Monica.

Neither the FBI or the U.S. Attorney's Office in Boston would confirm Messina's claim.
