2 Mass. Sheriffs Call For A New Women's Correctional Facility

Two Massachusetts sheriffs are pushing a plan for the state to build a new correctional facility for women, saying it will lower the prison population and save money.

Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea Cabral says such a facility would provide women greater access to rehabilitative programs, and more quality time with their children.

"You will reduce recidivism if you give people a good enough environment in which to achieve and excel, and take some measure of responsibility for themselves," Cabral said.

Cabral said 90 percent of women incarcerated in Massachusetts are mothers.

The plan is also supported by Middlesex Sheriff Peter Kotoujian.
