Lawrence Mayor, School Committee Under Fire In State Report

The state has issued a scathing assessment of the Lawrence School Committee and its chairman, Mayor William Lantigua.

The Department of Education report says committee members need training to understand their role and priorities. School Committee Vice-Chairman Samuel Reyes says he agrees completely with the report.

"Unless the Department of Education, and commissioner's office, steps in, we're going to continue to let our school district down," Reyes said.

Reyes says the committee's first priority should be finding a new school superintendent.

"We need to know and bring people in that will educate us in regards to our school department and in regards to where are we failing at," Reyes said.

Lawrence has been without a schools superintendent since Wilfredo Laboy was indicted on fraud and embezzlement charges last year.
