Boston Takes Part In 'Small Business Saturday'

Local and federal officials are teaming up in the name of small business.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and the U.S. Small Business Administration are touting what is called "Small Business Saturday," an alternative to Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

Menino said it's a great way to boost the local economy.

"You know they hire neighborhood people," Menino said. "Sixty percent of the dollar spent stays right in the neighborhood and you know, builds up the strength of the neighborhood in our cities."

Organizers say the event last year helped push sales at small businesses up more than 28 percent from 2009.
