Update: WBUR's Andrea Shea has more on the theater's closing.

Original post:

The AMC Loews movie theater in Cambridge's Harvard Square will permanently close on July 8, the Harvard Crimson is reporting.

The university publication reports:

Ryan Noonan, the director of public relations for AMC Theatres, wrote in an emailed statement that the theater will be sold as part of a continual effort to improve the quality of the AMC theater chain.

In addition to offering new films, the theater is famous for its Saturday late-night showings of the cult musical "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." The Crimson calculates that the theater has shown "Rocky Horror" about 1,500 times since the tradition began there in 1984.

This program aired on June 21, 2012. The audio for this program is not available.
