MBTA To Add Thousands Of Security Cameras

The MBTA is using millions of dollars in federal grants to install thousands of new security cameras on the transit system.

The senior director of security and emergency management for the T says the agency has 15 to 20 projects already in the works with many more planned. The projects will essentially double the number of security cameras across the subway, bus and train system, and make the system safer. The T would not say exactly how many cameras it would have.

The projects will add cameras to bus garages, stations, and the trains and buses themselves.

Civil libertarians expressed concern about privacy over the number of cameras, but T officials say only about 10 percent of the cameras can be remote controlled and none can read fine print.
