Mass. Lottery Posts Record Profits, Sales

The Massachusetts Lottery has posted its highest sales and profits in its 40-year history.

The treasurer's office said Tuesday the Lottery earned an estimated $981 million in net profit during the state fiscal year that ended June 30.

That's $30 million above the previous record, set in Fiscal Year 2006.

The office said in its release:

Lottery profits are the single biggest source of unrestricted local aid to Massachusetts’ municipalities.

Lottery sales were just over $4.7 billion in the latest fiscal year, according to the treasurer's office — $31 million more than the previous sales record, set in Fiscal Year 2008.

“Thanks to new game introductions, strategic marketing and prudent management, we are marking fiscal 2012 as the highpoint in the Lottery’s 40-year history with an all around record-breaking year," Treasurer Steven Grossman said in the statement.
