Man Dies After Downtown Boston Shooting

7/30 Update: The shooting victim has been identified by police as Dumayne Chin, 25, of Boston.

According to preliminary results of the investigation, police said it appears that "members of two groups became involved in a verbal altercation which led to shots being fired by two individuals."

One of those individuals was Chin. The other, according to police, was a 33-year-old male who "possessed a registered firearm and a valid license to carry it."

Police added of the second shooter: "At this point in the investigation, it appears he may have acted in self-defense and has not been charged at this time."

Boston Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man downtown early Sunday.

At about 2:22 a.m. Sunday, police responded to a report of shots fired and, at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and High Street, discovered a male victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

The man, who has not yet been identified, was transported to Tufts Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased.

According to police, "detectives have identified and interviewed an individual believed to be involved in the shooting."

However, Boston Police are still encouraging anyone with information on the shooting to call the Homicide Unit at 617-343-4470. Individuals who want to provide anonymous information can contact the CrimeStoppers Tip Line at 1-800-494-TIPS or text the word “tip” to CRIME (27463).

It is the city's 28th homicide of 2012.
